Leading towaRDS SUCCESS
In this post you'll:
Being a leader can be cut-throat. People look up to you for guidance, advice, and vision.
Because life is filled with uncertainty. Your teamâs journey will not always result in wins and for some people, losing is such a difficult pill to swallow. It can lead to a lack of confidence and motivation which can spell your teamâs downfall if theyâre not immediately addressed.
This is where a leader with a positive attitude comes in handy. When the team fails, theyâll be needing someone to remind them that everythingâs not lost and that winning is still possible if everyone starts working together. They basically need someone who would rally them in times of crisis.
âWhy Positive Attitude Matters
The Value of Failure
Leaders should be forward-thinking and not someone who gets easily discouraged by failure. Itâs hard for people to bounce back when thereâs no one to reassure them that life goes on and that the fight is not over.
Great leaders do not easily give up even if the cards are stacked against them. They pick up the pieces, they persevere, and they do everything they can to see to it that everyone carries that same attitude.
Think about it.
Would we be enjoying the benefits of a light bulb had Thomas Edison given up on it after so many failed attempts? Would we be enjoying the contributions of Microsoft had Bill Gates given up after his first business, Traf-O-Data, failed miserably?
Our thoughts shape our actions. If a leader doubts their ability to complete a project or knock down a goal, his or her motivation to work diminishes. Consequently, if a leader doubts his or her ability to lead people, his ability to connect and influence them suffers.
For some people, positive thinking is a bunch of mumbo jumbo because theyâd rather be idealistic or realistic even, and thereâs nothing wrong with that. In fact, having a balance and being one of each will be better for your team. You canât keep believing in a lie and keep pushing when the data clearly shows that youâre not doing well. If you are going to succeed as a leader, you need to have a bit of everything. Being too positive may not be good every time.
The Importance of a Mentor
âWhat makes a leaderâs job difficult is that itâs not only yourself you need to worry about but the people you lead too. Are you worthy of their trust and admiration? Are you giving them a reason to continue to follow your lead?
This is the reason why itâs important for leaders to have mentors because there will be times when youâll need the wisdom and the perspective of someone whoâs been there before. Someone who has learned from their experiences as a leader. Someone who understands what youâre going through.
Being a leader puts you on a difficult spot because you need to know how to handle some of the toughest decisions youâre going to make. Itâs never easy to let someone go or be comfortable with an impending merger but you have to do it anyway, right?
Being positive will not always lead to something good because adversity is part of life. Having a positive mindset makes it easier for us to deal with these difficult moments though because it teaches us to accept failure as a necessary step and not as a defeat.
